MY PRACTICE

Grief changes almost everything.

The death of someone you love. The loss of a pet. Divorce. Trauma. A relationship ending. A major life transition. A new diagnosis. Losing the future you thought you were going to have.

Loss has a way of changing not only how your life looks, but how you understand yourself within it.

I'm Rebecca Van Tassel, LCSW-S, a therapist with 18 years of clinical experience. My career has been deeply rooted in grief, trauma, and loss, but my work also includes teens navigating the enormous changes of adolescence, people learning to understand their ADHD, and LGBTQIA+ clients exploring identity, relationships, and what it means to live more authentically.

Those specialties may look different, but what draws me to them is surprisingly similar.

I love working with people when the old way of understanding themselves or their lives doesn't quite fit anymore. When “What's wrong with me?” can start becoming “Oh. That makes sense.” When we can get curious about what you've been carrying, what actually works for you, and what you want your life to look like from here.

Therapy for the life you're actually living

You don't have to come to therapy knowing exactly what's wrong or what you want to change.

You might be grieving, overwhelmed by change, struggling with relationships, trying to better understand yourself, or realizing that old ways of coping aren't working anymore.

That's where we can start.

My approach is warm, collaborative, direct, and deeply human. We'll get curious together about what's happening, what you need, and how to help you move through it without rushing, minimizing, or making it prettier than it is.

Sometimes things seem impossibly hard.

We can start there.

Hi, I'm Van.

Welcome to Austin Grief Counseling. My name is Rebecca Van Tassel, though my friends call me Van. I'm the owner and therapist behind AGC.

Choosing a therapist is deeply personal. My hope is that this page gives you a sense of who I am, how I approach this work, and whether you can imagine yourself sitting across from me.

I'm originally from Michigan and have called Austin, Texas home since 2010. I'm a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. I'm also no stranger to grief in my own life. I've navigated significant losses, including divorce and the death of my mom. I don't believe a therapist needs to have lived your particular loss to understand it, but my own experiences with grief have profoundly shaped the way I sit with other people in theirs.

What therapy with me is actually like

I won't tell you everything happens for a reason. I won't give you a timeline for when you should be "over it." And I'm not interested in helping you become better at pretending you're okay.

Instead, we'll get curious about what you're experiencing and what is influencing your grief. We'll make room for the parts that hurt, the parts that don't make sense, and even the parts that might make you wonder, Am I supposed to feel this way?

My role is to bring nearly two decades of clinical experience, specialized knowledge, curiosity, compassion, and a really good supply of tissues into the room with you. Together, we'll work toward understanding what has changed, what you need now, and how to navigate a world that may look very different than the one you knew before.

You'll probably cry in my office.

You'll probably laugh even more.

Therapy can be hard work, but I have tremendous respect for what people are capable of when they're given a safe place to be honest about what they're carrying. I won't rush that process or pretend there's an easy way through it.

It is a privilege to be invited into someone's life during some of their most vulnerable moments. After all these years, I still consider that one of the greatest gifts of this work.
